Sinus Problems — Knowing Sinusitis and Its Complications

Having simple colds is usually related to sinusitis. But what are the signs of sinus problem? What is sinusitis? Sinusitis is an infection in the lining of sinus cavities due to allergies and viral infection causing inflammation and swelling. Infections in the sinus are often experienced together with facial and head pain. Sinusitis can be either acute or chronic. Acute sinusitis is often called sudden sinusitis. It usually starts by having an upper respiratory tract infection through bacteria accumulation. Chronic sinusitis, often called long-term sinusitis, needs further treatment.

There are three common bacteria strains that may have caused your sinus problems: Streptococcus pneumoniaeMoraxella catarrhalis, and Haemophilus influenzae. Among the three, Haemophilus influenzae is the most common bacteria-causing sinus infection. Sinusitis caused by viral infection usually last for only 7 to 10 days and bacterial sinusitis usually follows viral sinusitis caused by nasal irritation. They can be treated with antibiotics or other methods or medications.

What are the possible complications of sinusitis? Complications may include periorbital infection and brain abscess. Other complications such as frontal and sphenoid sinusitis may require immediate aggressive treatment. Why? Because both frontal and sphenoid sinusitis may cause meningitis and other brain problems.

Can it be treated? Yes. The soonest you find yourself having symptoms of sinusitis, and to protect yourself from complications, start with the following remedies immediately:

  • Increase your fluid intake (water and fruit juices).
  • For unbearable pain, you may use over-the-counter pain relievers and decongestants bought from pharmacies.
  • You may also apply a soft, moist wash cloth in your face several times in a day.
  • Give yourself a hot bath.
  • Steam by breathing air from a steamy shower or a bowl filled with hot water.
  • Use saline drops, also found in drug stores, to open your nasal passages and reduce blockage in your airways.

Is sinusitis a serious disease? Yes, it could be, without early attention and proper treatment. Sinusitis may lead to complications if not cured. Since the brain and the sinuses have proximity, it might lead to great danger. Infection in the brain by anaerobic bacteria living in your blood vessels and within bones is the worst scenario. Meningitis, abscesses, and other related conditions can threaten your life just because of ignoring a simple sinusitis attack. Worst, the patient suffering from sinusitis who is also ignoring the fact that he/she has sinusitis may experience personality changes, altered consciousness, eye problems, seizures, and even death.

People may ignore persistent symptoms related to sinusitis and continue with their daily lives without taking a minute to find out if they need treatment can actually be very dangerous. Other people may think that over reacting to a simple cold is funny; but information such as those relayed above won’t do any harm if followed. We only have a short life to live; illness such as this can be prevented and even cured fast through early diagnosis. Live a healthy lifestyle plus monitor your health plus seek a doctor equals to a long happy living.
